FYI - Surgery
Here is some helpful information for those patients who are scheduled to have surgery. When surgery is your best course of treatment, Dourron OB/Gyn Associates, P.C. is with you every step of the way. Weíll continue to provide personalized care tailored to your specific needs. Learning in advance what to expect from surgery will greatly ease the stress you may experience before and after the procedure. That's why we'd like to start off by giving you the following general information.
Pre-operative office visit
After you and your doctor determine that surgery is necessary, our surgical coordinator will set a date for the surgery and schedule your pre-operative (or pre-op) visit to our office. During your pre-op visit, your doctor will perform a physical exam if necessary, answer any last-minute questions, and give you instructions on how to prepare for the surgery. You may also need to fill out some paperwork.
Pre-operative hospital visit
Our office will also arrange for whatever tests and/or lab work that may be needed, such as urine tests, blood tests, or other lab tests. These are done at the Surgery Center of Dekalb Medical Center either on the same day as your pre-op office visit or on the same day as your surgery. The hospital staff will set up whatever X-rays or additional lab tests may be needed and help you make arrangements for anesthesia if necessary.
Day before surgery
On the day before the surgery, it is very important that you do not eat or drink anything after midnight, unless instructed to do so by your doctor or anesthesiologist.
Day of surgery
Do not eat or drink anything the morning of your surgery unless instructed to do so by your doctor or anesthesiologist. Leave your home early enough in order to arrive at the hospital at the scheduled time. Please be aware that the doctors remain on call during surgery days, so that they may be called away to attend deliveries.
Generally most surgeries are scheduled on Wednesdays, unless there are urgent circumstances. Each physician can accommodate, with enough advance notice, and subject to the availability of operating room time at Dekalb Medical Center, surgeries on days other than Wednesdays. This requires special arrangement with the involved surgeon and the office staff.
